Hau Giang has proposed that a national highway section that connects it with Can Tho City be expanded from two-four lanes.
It says the VND4.5 trillion ($195 million) expansion would boost connectivity and economic growth while helping avoid overload on a high traffic road.
Authorities in the Mekong Delta province have suggested that the investment needed to expand the 47-kilometer National Highway 61C be sourced from a fund dedicated to developing the Mekong Delta region adapt to climate change.
The road is currently seeing high traffic of 15,000 vehicles per day and could be overloaded without an expansion, said Mai Van Tan, director of the provincial transport department.
The road, completed in 2012 with a price tag of VND3.4 trillion, shortened the distance between Vi Thanh Town in Hau Giang and Can Tho City by 15 kilometers.
